Project: “Educational financial adoption of an orphaned child in Rwanda and Burundi”

  • Current situation
  • Rwanda is developing remarkably. Yet the country remains poor, and the wounds of the 1994 genocide are not yet repaired. Burundi is not a safe country because of the constant war and conflicts between Hutus and Tutsis. Peace agreements have been signed, and we hope that these will materialize even if it is just to reduce poverty and related social problems.

In such war-torn areas, children are often the first victims: they loose parents and start living on the street, living in total poverty, and without hope. We must do something for these children to achieve a good future. Education, the key of each development is one way to secure a peaceful country for the next generations.

Furthermore, orphaned children or children from poor families which have no education have a risk to be used as child soldiers in war areas. Children learn to kill, plunder and violate the law. But these children are also used in different ways for example as bearers, cooks, spies, guards or sex slaves.

Foundation Together in Action, with your support, wants to do something about it and give these children a normal life within their society. One way to do this is through supporting the educational financial adoption.

  • How does the educational financial adoption work?
  • Adopting a child financially means that one pays a fixed amount to a particular child per month for the child to get education (books, school fees, food, clothes and medical aid). By doing that, you give the child the chance to escape the vicious circle of poverty and underdevelopment. In that way you help the child directly and indirectly to have a good future since education gives sufficient luggage to a child to independently build a future.
    • Food and medical care

Children get two meals per day at school: a breakfast and an afternoon meal. This is important because the child does not have at home enough and sufficient eating. In most families there is simply not enough money to be able to feed well. Besides, families don't have clean drinking water, which is vital and important for their life.

The school controls and identifies the possible health problems in the children. Also, they ensure preventive care and disseminate health information. With your aid the child without financial resources can get good food and medical care.

    • Your contribution and spending

Your contribution is € 15, - per month. This contribution goes directly to the children. This amount is can pay school fees, clothing, food, and pay medical care of a child up to 14 years. For financing a child at university level is these amount fixed at € 20 (minimum). Your contribution is 100% used for these activities because the costs of the foundation in the Netherlands are covered from other resources. Foundation members are volunteers.

You will receive a newsletter (minimum three times per year) and an annual financial report. In this way, you can monitor where your money goes. In addition, the school sends us a budget in which all expenditure and income are outlined.
    • How do we choose the children?

First priority is given to orphaned children and the children from the poorest families. These are those children already earmarked by local authorities and church institutions as orphans and poor children. You can adopt a child from the primary school to its university level. The choice of gender is yours.

Finally, you can correspond with the child you support. You can also call the child of the school about the prestation and perfomance of the child or about the other needs. If the child would like to write to you, we will seek your permission in advance. You can send other gifts through the post. We suggest English to be the language of communication.
