1.Organisation’s objectives
To support needy but brilliant children. To assist poor children. To promote and ensure that urban poor children are influenced in a positive way concerning their lives. To help them to help themselves by educating them.
2. Description of the organisation.
Urban poor child Organisation (UPCO) is a registered Community based (NGO) that work to support brilliant but needy to undergo training of their choice. The Organisation is based at Gbegbeyise which is one of the poorest and slum Community within Accra metropolis. Our targeted areas of operation are deprived and rural oriented communities within urban areas in Ghana.
2.1. HISTORY
UPCO started between 1999 & 2000 and was officially recognised in 2002 by register General Department and the Department of Social Welfare with the following. Certificate of Incorporation G.10127 Certificate of Social Welfare D.S.W/1740
2.2. Activities
UPCO runs the following programmes:
HOUSE OF REFUGE DEPARTMENT
A drop in centre, where parent and children visit for support. In other words, the House of Refuge serves as a Community Centre for children.
OUTREACH DEPARTMEMT
Community general outreach (parent -child advocacy) or sensitization programme on social issues such as Girl Child Education, Sex exploitation, HIV AIDS and etc.
LITERACY DEPARTMENT
Literacy classes for both formal and non formal educated children (street Conner education).
DEMONSTRATION DEPARTMENT
Children are introduced to the various trades of their choice (Vocational Skills).
SPONSORSHIP DEPARTMENT
School fees support for the children.UPCO currents staff capacity is eighteen 18 paid staff and one (1) Dutch volunteer.
3. Background situation of the local community
As stated, UPCO’s targeted operation areas are rural oriented and urban poor communities. In other words, deprived communities within the urban areas in Ghana. The situation of the community of operation is very deplorable in a sense that education was not realised in the early stages of some parents and families, therefore, majority of parents find it difficult to understand and cooperate with the educators and as a result, poverty has become the new phenomena in the society of ours. To add further, currently, we have all the structures in place but we are to equipped them to enhance quality delivery.
4. Why this project can contribute to improving the situation in the area
With the reference to our achievement so far, we believe this project will uplift the livelihood in the targeted communities to have substantial level.
The following are the achievement so far:-
a. Through our sponsorship (School fees support) about 300 hundred and more has been sent to school and now doing well in their daily life.
b. A good number of urban poor children has been trained professionally and now undertakes contracts from estate developers.
c. Through our outreached programme personal hygiene has been realized.
d. About six communities has benefited from us through school building support.
e. Through parent child advocacy programme about ten families have been reconciled.
f. Community centre for children and vocational training centre has been realized through our activities.
g. Through UPCO activities a good number of neglected children has been rehabilitated.
In other words, rampant sex and its teenage pregnancy has been reduced to 15% whiles a good number of young women has been empowered through vocational training.
5. Objectives and activities; composition and size of target group; intended results; number of beneficiaries.
OBJECTIVES
To give the children the chance to see and begin to try out to several trades.
To break poverty illiteracy circle through training.
To bring education into the door steps of the needy.
COMPOSITION & SIZE
It is difficult to quantify the targeted group, but it is expected that about 2000 Ghanaians and non Ghanaians children in the suburb will be the direct beneficiaries. It is expected that by the end of this project, the beneficiaries Communities will see positive growth in their daily lives.
It is also expected that rampant sexual exploitation and rapid teenage pregnancy cases will reduce. On the other hand, the implementation of this project will bring education into the door steps
of the targeted children/group. May be needlessly, the above specify materials are currently our urgent needs to enable us empower men and women in our areas of operation. Also to mention through Wilde Ganzen and other fundraising group in Netherlands a sizeable classrooms and workshops has been realized and are waiting for equipment for use. It is in line with this that management of UPCO is putting up the above request to unable us improve the socio economy difficulties children go through during the day. It is understood that the donor will be permitted to visit the project and evaluate whiles the management of UPCO provides periodic progress report to the foundation.
